Celebrating PD Ports colleague Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers studies success

16th October 2026

Congratulations to Graham West, Deputy Manager, for our Isle of Wight operations, and Emily Bulmer, commercial manager for Tees bulks, who have both recently achieved success in their Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) studies.

The pair have both passed the Port and Terminal Management qualification, which develops their knowledge of the shipping industry while supporting their long-term career ambitions.

Graham, who is Deputy Manager at PD Ports’ Medina Wharf in Cowes, achieved the highest marks nationally in the qualification and was awarded the Port of London Authority Award by the Institute for 2026.

Graham has worked in the shipping and ports industry for around 22 years and joined PD Ports in Cowes in 2012.

Before joining the business, he worked at Southampton Container Terminal as a Multi-Skilled Operator before moving into an Intermodal Planning role, coordinating the loading and unloading of containers on rail services.

As Deputy Manager at Medina Wharf, Graham supports the day-to-day running of the port. His role includes overseeing operations, providing port agency services, acting as the Port Facility Security Officer (PFSO), and operating plant and equipment across the site.

Speaking about the award, Graham said: “I’m delighted to receive the Port of London Authority Award. Achieving the highest marks in Port and Terminal Management makes all the hard work worthwhile.

“Having already completed Introduction to Shipping and Port Agency, I’m looking forward to continuing my studies and working towards becoming a Member of the Institute.”

Graham received the award at the Institute’s prize giving awards ceremony in London.

Congratulations, Graham, on this fantastic achievement and well-deserved recognition.

Emily Bulmer, has now completed three of the seven exams required to become a Chartered Member of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers.

Emily first began studying with the ICS after COVID, passing the Introduction to Shipping module while working in the communications team.

After moving into a commercial role, she decided to continue her studies to help her build a broader understanding of the shipping industry, covering areas such as agency, finance, charter parties, operational planning and ship management.

The knowledge gained will support her day-to-day role and help her develop her career within the industry.

Speaking about her achievement, Emily said: ” After moving to commercial, I wanted to improve my operational understanding and better support customers and their requirements.

“The exams have given me a much better appreciation of the wider shipping industry and how different parts of the supply chain fit together.

“I feel they’ll help me in my role and give me more confidence when working with agents, customers and stakeholders.

“Now that I’ve passed these modules, I’m looking at which ones to take next as I continue working towards Chartered Membership.”

Congratulations, Emily, on this fantastic achievement and best of luck with your remaining studies.
