Deputy Head teachers from two Redcar schools have been shadowing senior managers at PD Ports in a bid to further enhance leadership skills amongst teachers.

PD Ports in collaboration with Trust4Learning teamed up to provide Paul Gribbon, Deputy Head of Kirkleatham Hall Special School and Paul Richardson, Deputy Head of Zetland Primary School with an insight in to the different leadership and management styles practised at Teesport.

The purpose of the visit was to share some of the challenges faced by private sector businesses and within the education sector around succession planning, resilience, staff development, culture and resource management.

The team at PD Ports then highlighted procedures implemented at Teesport to overcome such challenges with the aim of the Deputy Heads being able to transfer this knowledge back in to the school environment amongst managers and teachers.

As schools come under increasing pressure to manage ever-squeezed resources whilst ensuring high levels of attainment, school leaders are recognising the need for improved planning procedures and introducing smarter working practices as well as addressing cultural changes to enable the development of leadership and management skills.

Russ McCallion, PD Ports’ HR Director and Trust4Learning committee member, said: “PD Ports is one of eight community partners working together with Trust4Learning to challenge and support the schools involved to enable them to grow and be more resilient in an increasingly pressured environment.

“Working together with local education facilities to highlight and tackle business challenges whilst sharing best practice is something we should seek to encourage amongst the region’s businesses, schools, colleges and universities.”
