The Role
PD Ports are currently recruiting for a trainee to work on the river Tees Pilot Boat. A pilot boat is employed by the harbour to ensure safe carriage of Pilots to and from vessels entering and leaving the port. The candidate will be employed as a trainee deckhand and will be trained all aspects of pilot boat deck operations.
The role is a hands-on physical role, the candidate will be trained how tie-up the boat, how to assist the pilot in boarding and disembarking vessels, vessel housekeeping, rope work and other related tasks. The position could be looked at initially as a workboat deckhand however this will lead to development within the fleet of port maintenance vessels operated by the company.
PD Ports are looking to develop the skills of the right individual and expect the successful applicant to undertake training that is essential to carry out the duties, this will include Survival at Sea, First Aid, Watch Training, Marine Fire Fighting and Social Responsibility. On successful completion of these courses and the on-going training will result in qualification to an internationally recognised standard resulting in a Navigational Watch Rating Certificate.

The pilot boats work 24 hours a day so the candidate will be expected to work shifts. The shift work is in blocks of 12 hours, 7:30 am -7:30pm and would be 2 days on, 2 nights on and then 4 days off.

The hours of work and shift patterns for the candidate fall in line with legislation of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.
