The Department
Reporting to the Marine Engineering Superintendent this role will be located in the Conservancy Department at Vulcan Street in Middlesbrough. Conservancy is the Marine Department of PD Ports operating and managing vessels that fulfill the Statutory Harbour Authority requirements for the Port of Teesport and Hartlepool including ensuring safe navigation of vessels, river management and maintaining channel depth.
The department operates and manages a range of vessels Dredgers, MPV, Pilot Boats, Survey Craft, Harbour Masters Vessel and Oil Pollution Response Craft (OPRC).
The Apprenticeship
An exciting opportunity to undertake an apprenticeship program with PD Ports to gain full understanding and qualifications in maintenance building services.
Providing an understanding of the mechanisms of buildings, including electrical, plumbing, plant safety systems and equipment with the potential to progressing onto a Level 3 Building Service Engineering Service and Maintenance Engineer qualification. Playing a key role in planning and completing a range of maintenance work encompassing industrial and commercial building services and engineering systems such as ventilating, heating, water supply, waste (effluent discharge) and drainage. This includes related electrical isolation, disconnection, reconnection and reactivation. Completing planned preventative maintenance and undertaking any required remedial repairs.
A mentor from within the business will be allocated to support the candidate throughout their apprenticeship, to set learning goals and track progress, alongside an external training provider.
Knowledge of the regulations and legislation of the Conservancy Department, the wider business, health and safety and customer service skills will be developed during the apprenticeship.
Working hours will be 37.5 following a shift rota.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Assisting in general upkeep of all conservancy buildings – e.g. replacement/repairs of doors, window frames, wall fittings, floors, roofing, heating/plumbing systems and quays including deck boards, access ladders and fenders.
- Assisting in general upkeep of dredgers and river craft by repairs and renewals as required including renewal of watertight seals, repairing of furnishings, door locks, fenders, removal of bulkheads and panels, heating/plumbing systems, etc.
- Assisting in maintaining workshop equipment – circular saws, LEV, planers/thicknesser, band saw, dimension saw and hand tools.
- Assisting the shipwright in planned maintenance tasks
- Adhering to the company policies and procedures.
Applicants will need the following qualifications and initial skill base to apply.
- Ideally achieved five or more GCSE’s at Grade 4 and above including English and Maths
- Good level of IT Skills, Microsoft Word, excel, outlook as minimum
- Willingness to learn/ Flexible attitude
- Good level of communication skills – verbal and written
- Ability to create working relationships
- Aptitude for problem solving
- Enthusiasm
- Persuasive influencing skills
- Be able to work independently and as part of a team
