Taylors of Harrogate is home to Yorkshire tea, the second best-selling tea in the UK, plus market leading roast and ground coffees, and speciality teas. The business started in 1919 when Frederick Belmont, a talented and ambitious Swiss confectioner, arrived in Yorkshire, married a local girl and opened his first Bettys Café Tea Rooms in Harrogate. Over 90 years later, Bettys & Taylors is a vibrant and thriving family business with six Bettys Café Tea Rooms, a Craft Bakery, a Cookery School, Online Shop and one of the country’s most respected tea and coffee merchants, Taylors of Harrogate.

the brief

Containers for tea and coffee traditionally came through Felixstowe and were moved by road to Bury St Edmunds, where they were devanned, stored and delivered by road to the Harrogate blending site. This solution had been in place for many years and was becoming out dated. Taylors were increasingly looking for ways to reduce carbon emissions and introduce cost savings.

The logical solution

It was proposed to re-route containers to Teesport with a view to delivering them to Harrogate for unloading. After an initial discussion we suggested streamlining the two processes and applying a portcentric logistic solution. This involved devanning at Teesport, followed by storage, sampling, collating and delivery for blending.

The result

By storing the containers at Teesport and devanning at Billingham, there has been less need for a buffer stock at Harrogate.

As a result Taylors have been able to:

  • Reduce storage requirements in Harrogate from 11 days to 2-3 days
  • Save 130.90 road miles for each vehicle moved from Teesport to Harrogate

• Achieve a CO2 saving of 6.3 kg per vehicle.

“The team’s solution allowed us to completely rethink the import process. The new proposed system means less road miles and lower transportation costs, and has allowed us to significantly streamline our site in Harrogate.” David Hinks, Contract Manager – Taylors of Harrogate

“By working closely with the client we were able to take on board their objectives and aims and create a solution that exceeded their expectations. To us, it was a logical step to provide Taylors with more of the services they needed at Teesport and cut their road miles and emissions in the process. We look forward to enhancing and refining the process further over the next few years.” Geoff Lippitt – Business Development Director – PD Ports
